Language is more than words, it is a connection to identity, history, and culture.
The Wichita language, a member of the Caddoan language family, has been spoken by the Wichita, Waco, Tawakoni, and Keechi peoples for generations. While the number of fluent speakers has declined, the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes continue to preserve and revitalize their language through community classes, educational resources, recordings, and cultural programs.

Join us for The People`s Home: Intertribal Indigenous Pow Wow on Saturday, July 25, from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM at the Cal State LA, Jesse Owens Track and Field!✨
Celebrate a day of Native culture with intertribal dancing, drum groups, Native artists, amazing food, 50+ vendors, and special performances. Be sure to catch the Grand Entry at 12 PM, along with our specials including: Tiny Tots Special (sponsored by Denise Escoto), the Potato Dance (sponsored by Darlene Ayala), the Hand Drum Special (sponsored by our MC), the Back-to-School Special for K–12 students (sponsored by our Head Woman), and the Red Dress Special (sponsored by our Head Young Woman)
We`ll also host a Cake Walk in honor of our beloved coworker, Jamie King. We`d love your help by donating a homemade or store-bought cake to celebrate Jamie`s memory and community spirit.
🛍️ With 50+ Native vendors, we encourage guests to bring cash and cards to support Indigenous artists, makers, and food vendors.
🚗 Free parking is available in Structures A & B, with overflow parking in Structure C. Elder drop-off/pick-up is available at Lot 10. Please look out for traffic controllers!
☀️ It`s going to be a hot day, so don`t forget to bring water, wear sunscreen, and dress for the weather. Stay hydrated! We can`t wait to see you there!

We`re honored to introduce Nick Garfield (Wukchumni Yokut) as the Head Man for the UAII People`s Home: Intertribal Indigenous Powwow.
Originally from the Tule River Indian Reservation in Porterville, California, Nick now calls Los Angeles home. He enjoys attending powwows, traveling, crafting, dancing Northern Traditional, singing, and spending time with his family, including his wife and twin daughters, Willow and Tulie Rose.
Nick brings years of experience, leadership, and a deep respect for culture to the arena. Thank you for to taking the opportunity to represent and uplift your community! Please join us and our head man this weekend!💙

These teachings have been passed from generation to generation and continue to strengthen Wichita identity today.

Nick began volunteering with UAII last year and has dedicated more than 100 hours of service to our organization. He consistently showed up every Tuesday, always ready to lend a helping hand wherever it was needed. Whether he was assisting our elders, supporting The People`s Sore, helping clients with small tasks, or volunteering at community events and workshops, Nick could always be counted on. He brought a positive attitude, a warm smile, and a genuine willingness to serve others. ✨
As Nick heads to Arizona to continue his education, we want to thank him for his dedication and the many ways he has contributed to UAII. We wish him all the best in this next chapter and know he will do great things. Thank you, Nick, for your service. UAII will miss you! ❤️

Kenny is 16 years old, a junior in high school, and proudly comes from the Kitanemuk people of Tejon in Bakersfield, California. He has been dancing Northern Traditional since he was a tiny tot and enjoys traveling to powwows, singing and drumming with his family drum, Monte Field, and playing baseball.
As Head Young Man, Kenny represents the next generation of Indigenous leadership, carrying forward the teachings of his ancestors with pride, respect, and dedication. We look forward to celebrating with him in the arena and witnessing the strength, culture, and tradition he brings to our community.
Our relatives deserve safety, not exploitation. UAII is taking action to confront the growing crisis of Native people being trafficked and exploited by fraudulent treatment programs that target vulnerable individuals for profit. Through advocacy, collaboration and our dedicated Task Force, we remain committed to protecting our communities, supporting survivors and demanding accountability.
