Our Youth Council program honors our cultural roots and uses time-tested group activities to build consensus and prepare our youth to be future leaders in local and national issues.
The Youth Council meets the first Friday of every month and honors our cultural roots by using devices like “Talking Sticks” to ensure that everyone’s voice is heard during meetings.
We also use time-tested group activities developed by the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts that build team cohesion and consensus to accomplish tasks. To better prepare our leaders, our meeting are held using Parliamentary Procedure (Roberts Rules of Order).
In early summer, the Clubhouse hosts a retreat to develop team-building and decision-making skills in an outside environment.
Our Youth Council program is run like a high school Associated Student Body where the participants learn about local and national issues and choose where they want to focus their efforts for the year.
While each yearβs program has its unique focus, the Council also serves as an advisory board for all the programs within the American Indian Clubhouse and donates community service hours each year to activities within and outside of UAII.
Youth Council officers have plenty of opportunities every year to put their leadership skills to practice through real-world programs that make a difference. As representatives for our community, we try to send our Youth Council to various conferences throughout the country, where they can share and learn about American Indian issues facing other communities.
Our Youth Council is a UNITY-affiliated chapter and a major component of our “Youth-led” program.
Counselors in Training (CITs) are junior leaders in our summer camp program, support staff and working directly with young campers.
Our basketball, cheer, and archery programs help participants develop a wide range of leadership skills and traits.
There are many opportunities throughout the year for community service – especially during the holiday events at UAII.
