The American Indian Clubhouse (AIC) Youth Council is an advisory board comprised of youth-elected officers that support the AIC at many community functions. The council members also serve as ambassadors in our community through an array of special committees, which include the following: education, health/wellness, prevention, culture, and leadership.
In September, the AIC Youth Council held its annual election and new officers were elected for the 2019-2020 Year. As an official United Native Indian Tribal Youth (UNITY) Youth Council, we will be attending the mid-year conference in Tempe, Arizona, in February of next year.
The elected officers and the general members work throughout the year on a variety of Community Service Projects, including the Halloween Carnival, the UAII Thanksgiving Feed, and the Youth and Family Christmas Party. They also support our Elders at the Native American Veterans Association Pow Wow, the Many Winters Gathering of Elders, and the Wildhorse Pow wow where they assist with the Elder Luncheon. Additionally, last year, the AIC Youth Council participated in a number of Community Vision Workshops focused on American Indian Education. The events were hosted by the California Native Vote Project.
As an advisory board, the members collect youth and parental feedback and help the staff of the Clubhouse develops a year-round youth-led program. Additionally, those who serve on the Youth Council have the opportunity to be selected as Counselors in Training (CIT) at the annual Robert Sundance Summer Camp. This paid internship offers participants job-readiness training and leadership opportunities throughout the summer.
This month, the Youth Council released its Annual Report, which was posted on the Facebook page of the American Indian Clubhouse. The Youth Council is open to all members of the American Indian Clubhouse, and officer positions are open to American Indian youth ages 13-18.
