United American Indian Involvement, Inc. has grown in its 47 years to become the largest non-profit provider of human and health services for American Indians/ Alaskan Natives (AI/AN) living in the County of Los Angeles. Established in 1974 on the streets of Skid Row, Downtown L.A. by two empowered American Indian women, Babba Cooper (Lakota) and Marian Zucco (Paiute) who wanted to serve the most impoverished community that lacked resources and access to services. Our founders were able to create legitimacy within the Skid Row community while instilling hope for those in need of support and services.
To commemorate the life and work of UAII co-founder, Babba Cooper, we request that all employees and members of the community wear red to symbolize the stop of violence against Native women. In February of 2020, our Board of Directors passed a resolution recognizing May 27th as it is the birthday of Mrs. Cooper. Wear Red Day will also fall at the conclusion of the Missing and Murdered and Indigenous Women’s month, continuing to raise awareness of the need for advocacy on the protection of Native women.
