COVID-19 UPDATE FOR OUR CLIENTS AND STAFF

BY UAII

Dear members of the UAII community,

United American Indian Involvement, Inc. is monitoring updates from the Indian Health Service, the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization regarding COVID-19.

You may have some growing concerns about COVID-19.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health continues to recommend that the public do the

following to protect themselves and others from respiratory illnesses:

• Stay home when you are sick.
• Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the
bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands.
• Limit close contact, like kissing and sharing cups or utensils, with people who are sick.
• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or
wipe.
• Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. If you do not have a
tissue, use your sleeve (not your hands).
• Facemasks are most effective when used appropriately by health care workers and those
directly caring for people who are sick and by people who are sick (source control).
• Get a flu immunization if you have not done so this season.

Further actions being taken by UAII in response to the changing narrative around COVID-19 are:

Beginning Saturday, March 14th, all UAII workshops and

group activities will be suspended until April 6th.

• Gatherings of any size that involve individuals who are at a higher risk for illness (i.e. Seniors) are
discouraged. If you have any questions about this please talk with your Department Director.
• Our existing breakfast and lunch program will be offered to eligible Clients as “to go” meals.
Congregate meals will be suspended until April 6th.
• All non-essential gatherings by Clients or Community Members is highly discouraged and will be
asked to disburse or go home for everyone’s health and safety. Please follow the process
outlined in the Front Desk Manual, Section II. C. Problems.
• The UAII Clinic has enacted a phone triage plan and an in-person plan. The Clinic will remain
open during this time. Please refer to the Clinic’s “COVID-19 Precautions and Response” notice
dated 3/12/2020.
• UAII will remain open during this time so that individual services for our clients can be fulfilled.
Department Directors will provide the service plan to follow.
• Staff should seek guidance from your Department Director for matters that will impact your
normal work schedule. For example, recent school closures.
• During staff meetings Department Directors have been instructed to continue to facilitate the
sharing of information and protocols that we have developed or are using in response to COVID19.
• Facilities is continuing to sanitize high touch areas such as doors, doorknobs, tables, and shelves
on each floor.
• We are continuing to work together with Central High School. As you may have heard, LAUSD
announced that school closures will go into effect Monday for at least the next two weeks.

Our Elders are our most vulnerable population group and we would like to protect them

as best as we can. As the situation surrounding COVID-19 continues to change, we will

update everyone as necessary.

Thank you for your commitment to the community we serve.

Sincerely yours,

Gene Martinez, UAII Interim CEO
